Hike an urban rainforest
Tijuca Forest is special for many reasons, but one of the most interesting might be that it’s in the heart of Rio. If you’re not quite up to trekking through the South American jungle, this is the closest you can get to the experience without the fear of being lost forever. You’ll still need to bring your walking shoes and take it seriously, but it saves heading out into the wilderness to feel close to nature. Ten minutes in, you won’t even know you’re in the middle of a major city.
Babbling brooks, dense vegetation, and upwards of thirty waterfalls are scattered throughout the forest, as well as recreation areas ideal to take a picnic and relax among the trees. There are also several restaurants and architectural features and sculptures to see. You could make twenty trips into Tijuca forest and see something different every time, so if you’re fond of nature, this is somewhere you must see on your trip to Rio.
