Prainha Beach

This little-known surf beach is the perfect place to get away from the crowds at Copacabana or Ipanema.

Go off the Beaten Track

Rio’s beaches are beautiful, but the fact that everyone knows that leads to crowding, bustle, and noise. If you’d like a more relaxed experience, try heading out to Prainha beach. It’s a popular surfing spot among locals and people in the know, but it’s just far enough away from the central city to be quiet during the day, when there aren’t big waves to be had–so time your visit for when the tide is low.

Rio is a popular tourist destination, and very little of it is truly undiscovered–but Prainha beach is a well-kept secret, and definitely something to brag about having discovered to your friends (don’t worry, we won’t tell them where you heard about it). Aside from being a beautiful setting for a walk along the beach, there’s something special about being one of the few in the know about a place like this.
