A short distance, just a few miles from Edinburgh’s city centre is Portobello beach – Edinburgh’s very own beach resort! Portobello used to be an independent town until 1896 when it joined the city of Edinburgh.
You would never know it, but Portobello has two glorious miles of golden sand on its award winning beach and during summer hosts popular live events, including the Big Beach Busk as well as many triathlon and sporting events. There is also a fabulous indoor Victorian swimming pool with Turkish baths if you are feeling daring. For sports lovers try your hand at sailing or kayaking – it’s all available.
Set a little further back on the high street are bakeries, cafes and traditional bars where you can grab snacks for a beach picnic or indulge in a meal in one of the establishments on offer.
For lovers of all things Victorian and Georgian– the residential architecture and parks in this area are attractive and protected within the conservation area.
So, when you visit Edinburgh on a sunny day and want a break from the shops and culture, head down to Portobello Beach for a seaside day out – the family will love it.
