Piazza del Campo

Piazza del Campo, also known as Il Campo is the main square in Siena surrounded by many trendy restaurants and bars. It is considered to be one of the finest examples of secular architecture and a universal symbol of the city.

The earliest documented mention of the area dates back to the 12th century when this place was used for public celebrations, fairs, and markets. An interesting fact is that the guidelines for the creation of Piazza del Campo were written in 1297 by the government, but the actual construction started much later. Palazzo Comunale was the first building that was constructed at the square when the city was ruled by Governo dei Nove.

The Palio Horse Race

The Palio Horse Race is the most important event in Siena. The race is held at Piazza del Campo 2 times a year, on 2nd of July and a 16th of August. There are 10 contestants and the race is run for three laps. Visitors can watch the race from the center of Piazza del Campo for free, but the best spots are usually taken early in the morning on the day of the race. You can also purchase tickets and watch the race from a more convenient position.
