The Citadel Park or the Parc de la Ciutadella as it is also known, lies on the edge of the old city. When the park was created in the mid-19th century it was the only place in the city in which Catalan people could come to relax in a beautiful green space. The 280,000 m2 of land includes Barcelona Zoo, the Parliament of Catalonia, the Museum of Natural Science and a small lake.
The large ornate cascading fountain was designed with incredibly striking detail by Josep Fontserè and dominates the park with a Quadriga de l’Aurora monument in gold on top of the arch.
The zoo of Barcelona is also housed inside the park, it has one of the most varied collections of animals in Europe, the aim of the zoo is to investigate, conserve and educate. It is the perfect stop off point in Barcelona for families, in fact you could spend a whole day in the park.
The museum of Natural science also offers children and adults the chance to explore zoology and geology in greater depth. When you have completed everything the park has to offer, relax on a rowing boat with a picnic under the blissful Mediterranean sunshine.
Parc de la Ciutadella is the place to come to for families which children of all ages who are visiting Barcelona.
