The tranquil Margaret Island is a nice surprise in the middle of the vibrant city of Budapest. Its approximately 240 acres (97 ha) is primarily parkland with several points of interest, as well as fun activities. Nature enthusiasts will enjoy strolling the many pathways among shade trees and flower gardens taking particular note of the Japanese garden and the small zoo. Recreation activities offer a rubber-coated running track that circles the island, the spectacular Palantus waterpark and athletic centers offering football, tennis, ball courts, running facilities, and indoor/outdoor pools.
On the Checklist
A beautiful Art Nouveau water tower–an UNESCO protected site–allows visitors, and several church ruins exist from the island’s history, including the burial site of the island’s namesake, St. Margaret. A stunning Musical Fountain is a huge water feature that provides a light and sound show throughout the day–particularly fun at night with the lights.
Notes For Visitors
No private cars are allowed on the island, but taxis are. A guarded parking lot is available, though you can also take public transport via bus and subway. Transport vehicles of all kinds are available for rental–bikes, electric scooter, and fun multi-person peddle carts.
