One of Rio’s hidden treasures
Instituto Moreira Salles is a gorgeous cultural centre focused on art and craft from all over Brazil. The exhibitions are diverse and fascinating, but there’s always one that centres around Rio itself, usually curated from the archive of 80,000 historical photos in the museum’s collection. You never know quite what you’ll find here, but you can bet that it’ll be a journey into Rio’s rich history and culture that you won’t find anywhere else.
Explore the beautiful surrounds
The gardens around the Instituto Moreira Salles are also a study in Brazil’s unique cultural offerings, designed by world-renowned landscape architect Roberto Burle Marx, and complete with an artificial lake and river. There’s also a charming café that serves lunch and afternoon tea, so once you’re done exploring the institute, you can sit down and absorb everything you’ve seen in peace and quiet. On your way out, check the craft store–it’s the ideal source of unusual souvenirs for those hard-to-please folks back home.
