The Parliament makes a grand display on the banks of the Danube and is one of the tallest structures in Budapest. A little more than a century old, the Gothic Revival building is is one of the largest parliament buildings in the world. The symmetrical building also features a soaring neo-Renaissance dome. A view of the Parliament at night is not to be missed.
The Parliament is open almost everyday of the year and offers guided tours in several languages. Visitors are treated to impressive frescoes, statuary commemorating military and public figures, and ornate rooms filled with mesmerizing design details. The public tour takes visitors through a gold-plated staircase, the Old Upper House Hall with its fine, gilt-adorned oak carvings, the Lobby with its purported largest hand-made carpet in Europe, and the spectacular Dome Hall, with its awe-inspiring height and rich decoration. The crown jewels of the old Hungarian monarchy are housed here as well.
