Hogmanay or New Year to the non-Scottish contingency, is a three day festival where revellers from all over the globe take to the streets of Edinburgh to celebrate the New Year. A spectacle rarely seen elsewhere in the world, it is clear that nobody does New Year quite like the Scots!
From ceilidhs to street stalls, Christmas markets to Hogmanay fireworks over Edinburgh Castle – this is the place to party on December 31st every year.
A feast of events await, as across the city, bands play, torchlight processions take place and lively bars are packed from dusk till dawn. In 2015 approximately 150,000 people, young and old from all over the globe joined the streets of Edinburgh to bring in the bells with a wee dram or two and the party seems to get bigger every year!
At midnight – the haunting ballad of Auld Lang Syne echoes throughout the streets, vibrant fireworks light up the sky as live bands and DJs continue their sets into the early hours. Discovery Channel lists this event as one of the Top 25 World Travel Experiences – if you are still unsure, perhaps you should see it for yourself!
Just remember to reserve your tickets and accommodations early, many visitors book years in advance to secure their place at the greatest party on earth.
