There are many things to do in Barcelona even if you are on a budget. A free walking tour is an amazing way to get around and learn about the architecture and local places and people of interest.
Gothic Quarter Tour
Tours leave the Plaça de Catalunya each day and each tour takes between 2 – 2.5 hours. The free Gothic Quarter tour explores the areas of Las Ramblas, the Gothic Quarter, the Cathedral, the Roman walls, the Columbus monument and the old harbour. Tours leave the square at 11.00 and 14.00 daily, the walking tour is in English and will end at the Old Port of Barcelona where there are many bars and restaurants for lunch or dinner.
Gaudi Architecture Tour
If you wish to view the best of Barcelona architecture, you can take the free Gaudí tour instead. This free walking tour takes the same length of time, although you will need a metro ticket as it covers quite an area. In this tour you learn about Gaudí ’s life, walk the Passeig de Gracia to explore Casa Batlló and Casa Milà (La Pedrera), then the pièce de résistance – the Sagrada Familia Cathedral. If you wish to enter the Cathedral and climb the towers for the amazing city view it is recommended that you book your ticket in advance. This tour leaves the Plaça de Catalunya at 11.00 daily.
Barceloneta Beach Bike Tour
If you prefer to be down by the sea, there is also a 2 hour tour of La Barceloneta beach, Parc de la Ciutadella, the Castell dels Tres Dragons and the 1888 Universal Exposition. This tour ends with a bike ride along the seafront. You can hire a bike for a few euros or bring your own, this tour begins at 15.30 at Cap de Barcelona.
Try taking one of the free walking tours on your first day in the city, that way you get to see a glimpse of each area – if any are of major interest you can go back and spend more time there.
