Thean Hou Temple

The colourful Thean Hou Temple is a famed place of worship that showcases the splendour of temple art with its intricate designs and embellished pagodas.

Chinese architecture

Commissioned by the Hainanese community in Kuala Lumpur, the Thean Hou Temple is dedicated to Goddess Tian Hou. The prayer hall also has an altar to Guan Yin, the goddess of mercy.

The temple is a highlight of Chinese culture with its dragon-festooned courtyard pillars, ornate ceiling, gold-work, the six-tiered pagodas and statues that celebrate the Chinese almanac.

Chinese culture

The temple also hosts weddings and is often very crowded during special occasions particularly the Mid-Autumn (Mooncake) Festival and Chinese New Year.   During these times, bright red paper lanterns are liberally strung up and make for fantastic photography.

From the beautifully decorated gates supported by bright red pillars to the brilliantly coloured rooftops that tower, Thean Hou is as much a tourist attraction as a place of worship.
