Puerta del Sol, Madrid’s Busiest Square
Entertainment Around Every Corner
Puerta del Sol is one of the busiest public squares in Madrid. Filled with street artists, lots of tourists, shops and cafés, it’s busy day and night. There are always great photo opportunities with interesting characters!
There are many outstanding features in this historic square. The Real Casa de Correos building houses the clock tower that millions watch whilst counting down to midnight on New Year’s Eve. It is also famous for being Madrid’s “Kilometre 0”, with a stone set in the floor to mark the starting point of Spain’s 6 national roads. The statue of the Bear and the Strawberry Tree is also worth a look.
There are many self catered apartments located around the square, with shops, restaurants and bars just a few minutes away. It’s also close to other popular sites such as Plaza Mayor. It doesn’t get more central than Puerta del Sol.
The square is particularly pretty in December with a large Christmas tree taking centre stage. It’s a great place to try some “churros” dipped in chocolate sauce too.
