Museo Frederic Mares

Culture vultures and historians alike will delight at Barcelona’s finest art museum, the Museo Frederic Mares. Inside you’ll find an array of art pieces and sculptors donated by Frederic Mares himself, a local sculpture who left all his art collections to the city upon his passing. The museum is located beside the Gothic Cathedral and is housed in a building that was once part of the Royal Palace of Barcelona.

Barcelona’s Sculpture Museum

Inside you’ll find an array of pre-roman artefacts that date all the way up to the present day, a floor filled with Baroque and Renaissance art and a room dedicated to the lifestyle of the bourgeois. One of the museums biggest focuses, however, is an emphasis on Christian art, and you’ll find an array of religious displays including antique objects. The museum is also interestingly home to the most important collection of Spanish sculptures from the 12th to the 19th century

Frederic Mares Himself

Born in Portbou and brought up in Barcelona, the Catalan sculptor Frederic Mares spent his life collecting artefacts, treasures and sculptures from across the globe. Upon his passing, he dedicated his entire life collection to the city of Barcelona under the promise that the city would showcase it for the world to see. As such, the Museo Frederic Mares was born!
