George Washington House

A tour around this small museum gives visitors an idea of what life was like in Barbados in the 18th century, as well as an insight into the only trip that George Washington made outside of North America.

George Washington’s First Trip

When George Washington was 19 years old, his brother Lawrence became very ill, and they travelled to Barbados so that he could try and recover. This was the first and only time that George Washington left North America, and his time on the island helped shape the military leader he was to become.

Small Museum With Plenty To See

This 18th century house where the brothers stayed has been converted into a small museum, with an exhibition from George Washington’s diaries, and a display of Barbadian life in the 1900s. They offer a two hour tour of the house, and for $5 extra you can also tour the underground tunnels which were recently discovered.

Delicious Café

The guides are extremely knowledgeable and make it and entertaining tour. There is also a small restaurant on site, with some of the best coffee on the island. They are open for breakfast and lunch, and have a variety of sandwiches, salads and homemade cakes.
