de Young Museum

For over 100 years, the de Young Museum has been an important part of the cultural scene in San Francisco. As a fine arts museum, it features artwork from all over the world, with a strong emphasis on American artists.

The de Young Museum showcases American art through a chronological display, with pieces from as earlier at the 1600s. Major pieces include works by John Singleton Copley, Mary Cassatt, Diego Rivera, Georgia O’Keefe, as well as major work by Hopper, Rothko, de Kooning, Motherwell, and Diebenkorn.

Contemporary Collection

In 1988, the de Young expanded its acquisitions in international contemporary art. The current collection includes new media, photography, installation and conception works. California artists, in particular, have a strong presence as well as international artists such as Anish Kapoor, Doris Salcedo and Richard Deacon.

International Showcase

Beyond visual artworks, the de Young also has indepth collections featuring works from Africa, the Pacific, and the Americas. Costume and textile work, photography, American decorative work, and graphic art all form their own major collections. A highlight on the museum is its outdoor sculpture park.
