Gem of Hanoi’s Coffee Scene
Vietnam is famous for its strong, sweet coffee, so Hanoi is home to an overwhelming amount of cafes. Which to choose? Along with historic spots like Giang Cafe, one of the best places to grab a cup of joe is Cafe Pho Co, tucked away in Hanoi’s Old Quarter. “Tucked away” is not an exaggeration–visitors will find the coffee shop down a small alley behind a souvenir store.
Coffee with a View
Once visitors reach the rustic, birdcage-and-lantern-strung interior courtyard, someone will be there to take drink orders. Then guests climb a flight or two of rickety stairs to reach a covered patio overlooking beautiful Hoan Kiem Lake. Along with Hanoi specialties like egg coffee, the cafe serves other hot drinks and some snacks like small cakes.
The service at Cafe Pho Co isn’t especially speedy, but then, coffee is meant to be savored. Its prime Old Quarter location means that it’s close to many of the city’s major attractions. There’s also plenty of good food nearby from eateries like Bun Cha Ta and Banh Mi 25.
