Have a Windmill with Your Beer
Back in 1985, a musician named Kasper Peterson decided to open a brewery inside a dilapidated Amsterdam bath house. Since then, Brouwerij ‘t IJ has become one of the most famous beer brands in the Netherlands. Its quirky logo features an ostrich, as well as the huge windmill that stands next to the brewery.
A Famous Brewery
Brouwerij ‘t IJ regularly brews eight different kinds of beer–including the copper-colored Columbus and the lighter IJWIT–in addition to seasonal and limited-edition beers. The seating inside the brewery is close and cozy. But there’s also a larger outdoor terrace with views of the historic De Gooyer windmill, which is the tallest wooden windmill in the Netherlands.
The brewery doesn’t offer much in the way of food–just snacks, such as cheese and sausages. Brewery tours are available on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. Brouwerij ‘t IJ’s delicious beers and unusual setting have made it one of the most popular attractions in Amsterdam.
