Ben Thanh Market

Ho Chi Minh City’s most famous marketplace, where bartering is essential.

The Place to Shop

For those looking to purchase just about anything, Ben Thanh Market is a great place to start. While the current building has only existed since the early 1900s, a marketplace has existed in that spot for hundreds of years. Locals and travelers alike come to scour the gigantic marketplace for everything from clothes to home furnishings to groceries.

Heavy Haggling

It’s easy to find souvenirs at Ben Thanh Market–there are chopsticks, silk scarves, and t-shirts galore. But there are plenty of other things to buy there as well. Got a hole in your shoe? Grab a brand new pair of sneakers. Need caffeine? Have one of the workers grind you some fresh coffee. They even sell things like underwear and backpacks.

The important thing is for visitors to barter. Prices at the market are hugely inflated, especially for foreigners. Cut whatever price they initially offer in half. And if hunger strikes while shopping, grab a bite to eat at one of the many street food vendors who have set up shop inside the building.
